This new project draws inspiration from a craft in which both France and India have cultivated extraordinary expertise: weaving.
From soil to skin, a musical thread is drawn… Cotton blooms, spinning wheels turn, looms hum, and threads intertwine to form fabric—just as voices weave together to create harmony.
Lilanoor blends traditions, combining the expressiveness and technical mastery of Eastern and Western voices with Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance, all moving to the timeless rhythm of traditional looms.
To bring this theme to life, the myth of Arachne has been reimagined—the mortal weaver whom the jealous goddess Athena condemned to eternity as a spider.
In this version, the story unfolds in a lush, untouched jungle, inhabited only by little Makri, a virtuoso spinner and dancer (Lakshmi Bories Lanoire), living atop a cotton blossom.
The stage comes alive with sumptuous fabrics and intricate embroidery, serving as a canvas for Japanese shadow puppetry (kirigami) projections. Indian raags, songs by the poet and weaver Kabir, and French baroque and traditional melodies converge, creating a poetic fusion of cultures, voices, and movement.
